Raving Fans: A Coach

By Clint Best
March 2nd, 2012

I have been coaching business owners for ten years now, and I'm always on the lookout for great coaches to coach me.  Kim's unique ideas around using a journal to coach with immediately  caught my interest. Using JournalEngine along with her own unique talents and coaching philosophy,  Kim was able to make amazing insights into the way my thoughts are affecting my outcomes. The journaling kept me engaged and re-listening to the recordings of our sessions allowed me to leverage each conversation to its fullest. I am forever grateful for the path she has helped set me on, and I would highly recommend Frame of Mind Coaching to anyone who is serious about raising their own awareness and making powerful improvements in their lives.

Popcorn - The Loyalty Factor

By Kim Ades
February 16th, 2012

Over Christmas I decided to send a gift to a few important people in my life. I wanted it to be something fun and playful and something that they could enjoy with their families. I decided to send them popcorn and a 7-tiered gift of snacks - nuts, pretzels, chocolate, etc. I found a company online who could deliver anywhere in the States - The Popcorn Factory.

I placed my order online and came across a few snags. 1 - They would not accept my address because it was Canadian - the postal code was not in a format that was acceptable. 2 - They provided me with a space to write out a greeting for the delivery and then several steps later, they offered me the option of buying a card to add to my gift. Did I not just do that?

In any case, I called the company, they took my call right away and fixed my order. My gift was received with joy by all of the recipients and I heard from each of them that the snacks were both fun and yummy. Great - my goal was accomplished. Next time I will have to think of another great idea to send their way.

The Popcorn Factory kept me updated by sending me emails letting me know each time one of my gifts was delivered - with information about the time and date of delivery. Once it was all done, they sent me a satisfaction survey to rate my experience with their product and the purchasing experience.  I don't usually fill out these surveys but this one was easy and I figured that the next Canadian client might benefit from my letting the company know about my web-related challenges.

Yesterday, I got a call from Heather. She is the customer service rep at the Popcorn Factory. She called to let me know that she received my survey and she apologized for the trouble I encountered. As a way to thank me for my business and to recover from the glitch, she is sending me a $20 gift certificate to use for any future purchases.

Wow - I was pretty impressed - THAT was great customer service. She took me by surprise in every way - first with the follow up call and second with the gift. I was happy enough to have my web-related challenges acknowledged and addressed. The gift was completely unnecessary.

I walked away feeling good. I began to think about how I could implement some of the Popcorn Factory's processes into my own business. I thought about all of the elements of their service...

  1. Online interface
  2. Telephone service and quick and friendly response
  3. Keeping me informed about deliveries
  4. Follow up survey
  5. Phone call to acknowledge problems and compensate for my troubles
  6. Gift to compensate for the glitches

I was so delighted by the call that I began to think about who else I could send a gift to and how I could use the $20 gift card. And then I thought about next year... here's what ran through my brain, "Popcorn is a cool idea - maybe we can make it a yearly tradition."

The Doorway Effect

By Kim Ades
February 3rd, 2012

You are upstairs in your bedroom working on a project of sorts, when you realize that you need a knife to continue with your task. So you go downstairs to the kitchen to get a knife and the moment you arrive, you completely forget why you are in the kitchen and what you needed to get.

Does that ever happen to you?

You are on a mission and suddenly the mission vanishes from your memory.  It takes a few minutes to remember what your goal was and what you intended to do.

Apparently, this sudden and momentary memory loss is called the "Doorway Effect".  It's caused as a result of literally walking through a doorway and into another spatial reality.  The effect is that your visual perspective changes when you walk through that doorway and it takes time to recalibrate your thinking and adapt to your new surroundings. Your mind experiences a blip and needs to work hard to remember its earlier thoughts.

Aging with Purpose

By Amy McGrath
February 3rd, 2012

journal excerpt:

My Great Aunt Jess just turned 100 at the end of December! She was the only girl in the family among her 8 brothers. She and her brother, Wendell, are the only remaining children. She never married, so she has dozens of great, great nieces and nephews. One of them decided to throw an open house at the nursing home where she lives to celebrate.  Her birth certificate was there because several people thought she was actually born in 1912 and she wasn't 100% sure.  Her birth certificate said Gender: Female; Color: White; Legitimate.

She's in a wheelchair but looks pretty good. Her hair was all done up and she was wearing sparkly nail polish for her birthday celebration. I like that she knows who I am. Some other people, not so much. But she knows me - even though I don't think I've been to visit her in a year.  Maybe it's because I'm one of four redheads in the family, including her.  Her teeth are breaking off, but she couldn't wait for me to open the box of peppermint bark I brought her. She was talking to me with chocolate cake all in her teeth. Why not eat all the sweets you can at that age?

For the past 5 years she has been saying that she's just waiting for God to take her home. She's ready. She wants to be in heaven.

On the drive home from the open house I asked my mom about aging. My mom has Multiple Sclerosis. She said your body just gives out on you and even if you have a desire to do the things you used to, you can't. I asked if she considered the ability to share her wisdom with younger people purposeful.  She said that her purpose was taken away from her when her kids grew up because her role was as a mother. I asked her to clarify - "You believe God created you for the sole purpose of raising children and after your kids are grown you cease to have purpose?" Basically.

Shortly thereafter, I read the biography of someone who considers herself a Professional Mother and encourages other women to approach motherhood as a profession. I don't want that for myself. Admittedly, I'm a little off the normal curve in terms of wanting children. I don't have the maternal urge to keep procreating. I guess viewing motherhood as a profession is a bit different than viewing motherhood as your sole purpose in life. Either viewpoint seems to create such a sense of loss when your kids are grown. Losing your profession is heart wrenching. My father never recovered from losing his 'dream' job. He worked again in a different field, but lost major self-esteem. And, if you have your purpose taken away from you by the time you're 50, that leaves a lot of life with you twiddling your thumbs, wishing God would take you to heaven.

So for me, motherhood is a relationship. It is one of many lessons I will learn in this life. I'm not just raising my daughter, my daughter is shaping me. I feel completely content knowing that I have given her all the basics she needs to be her own fabulous, independent person - not tied up in me and my purpose. I don't believe my purpose is based on physical ability.  I will still have purpose even if I'm sitting in a nursing home.  There's always a story to tell, a smile to share, a moment to treasure, an ear to lend (even if it has a hearing aid in it).  Now, losing my mind . . . that gets a bit tricky for me. If that happens, I guess I won't be bothered by it anyway.

Sometimes All You Need To Do Is Tell The Truth

By Kim Ades
January 20th, 2012

Just minutes ago, I was on a call with a coaching client.  She is a well known, top-level, fashion designer who was recently let go from a prominent women's brand after an 8 year stint.  Her contribution to that brand has been immeasurable and to acknowledge her efforts, she was given a sizable stock portfolio only six short months ago.   The real reason she was dismissed is unclear and has left her with immense confusion and self-doubt.  She has been wracking her brain to figure out what she did wrong and no matter who she talks to, she comes up empty-handed.

Now she is looking for the next opportunity.  There is no shortage of interest and she is scheduling meetings at lightning speed.  She is a rare breed and many of the major brands want the chance to recruit her to their company. Word on the street is that this creative genius is for hire - the only question is why did she leave her previous job?

Meeting after meeting, she is asked the same question, "Why did you leave?"

Stumped to give the right answer, she stumbles through, trying to find the politically correct rendition of her experience, with an attempt to diminish the fact that getting let go must mean something terrible and awful about her.

Here's what I suggested, "How about telling the truth?  Tell them that you don't know the real reason that you were let go and that it came to you as a shock.  Tell them that it was a huge disappointment and has left you with so much confusion that it has been keeping you up at night.  Tell them that no one seems to give you any kind of legitimate answer about the dismissal.   And then, talk about how you loved the brand and turned it into a multi-billion dollar concept and how you enjoyed every second of it and look forward to the next brand you can get your hands on."

Hearing my suggestion, relief washed over her.  She felt like she could finally let go of trying to manage other people's impressions and simply tell her story as she experienced it.  She didn't have to cover anything up.  She didn't have to pretend to be above it all.  All she had to do was tell her truth.

"I can do that - it feels so much better," was how she responded.

Follow your feelings - and just be yourself.  You never get better results than when you give yourself permission to be your best self.  Tell your story.  Be passionate about your story.  Be authentic and let go of the need to manage other people's opinions of you.  Let go and allow yourself to show up in all your glory.   Sometimes all you need to do is tell the truth.

Raving Fans: Music to our Souls

By Frame of Mind
January 20th, 2012

"I started off with a set goal in mind of focusing on what I wanted from my personal business as a sexual health consultant and my professional business as an Operating Room nurse manager.  Throughout the course I expanded and contracted in so many different ways which was painful but enlightening.  I was able to realize that my businesses were not the issue; it was me in my own way.  Unlike other courses, it was not just feel good fluff. It could be raw, gritty, sad, content, peaceful, frustrating, eye-opening, funny and enlightening; the gamut of feeling and emotions all wrapped in 10 weeks. All guided by Carla who is warm, understanding, funny and strong, who pushes the participants deeper into their thoughts to unearth all the goodness and wisdom that lies deep within us but is usually covered with a lot of trash.  The course uses journaling as a creative launch to move forward with my dreams, goals, and desires, [a] dumping ground for all the accumulated trash, to lay down the unearthed fresh goodness, ideas, clarity, and qualities that were growing and waiting to be found."
