Yoga Stretch for the Mind
Sometimes I do yoga – not professional yoga where you go to the studio with your mat. I spend five to 10 minutes in my room running through some yoga poses I picked up from my Wii Fit. I have noticed for the longest time that when I do a sun salutation, I can’t touch my toes. I know that flexibility can increase with stretching. Still, after my months of doing sun salutations on my own, when I bend over to touch my toes, there are a few inches between the ends of my fingertips and the tops of my feet.
The other day I had to get a physical. The doctor checked my eyesight and my hearing. She had me do a bunch of silly little things like balance on one foot and bring my knee to my chest. The next command was to touch my toes. Oh, shit! I thought. I can’t touch my toes. I hesitated and my doctor told me, “Amy, just give it a try. I bet you can touch your toes.” I bent forward and stretched my hands down to the floor. When I was about two inches away from the floor, the doctor said, “Just stretch a little more, you’re almost there.” Then, she walked over to where I was standing and gently pushed the top of my back. I exhaled and for a moment, the ends of my fingertips made contact with the tops of my feet. I discovered that I could actually touch my toes!
Often we settle for less than is possible because of our own self-imposed limitations. We try to reach for our goals but come up short. And then we create limits in our mind about what we can do, what we can handle, and what we’re worthy of. Those limits, when accepted, affect who we interact with, how much money we make, which opportunities we apply for… how much crap we’ll take. In order to achieve our goals, these limits must be challenged.
I could have done yoga for many more months assuming that eventually I’d be flexible enough to touch my toes. On my own, I never would have realized that I was already there. Without the challenge to my self-imposed limitation, I never would have closed the gap between what I thought I was capable of and what I really was capable of. I needed another person to challenge me. That’s what I do for my clients. I help them stretch so that they can close the gap between where they are and where they want to be.
